Queensland forest and wood plantations industry development project

Tropical and subtropical plantation research
Key projects are growing our private plantation sector

The Queensland Government is working with the Queensland forest and wood industry to deliver more targeted industry development for the private forest and wood plantation sector.

In 2009, the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI) launched a new statewide project with Timber Queensland to support this focus through improved services and enhanced capacity.

Two industry development officers have been appointed as part of the project, one placed with Timber Queensland and the other within DEEDI.

Implementing the Queensland Timber Plantations 2020 Strategy

The plantation industry development officers will play a major role in implementing critical components of the Queensland Timber Plantations 2020 Strategy, including:

  • ongoing consultation with industry and stakeholders to identify and address impediments to industry growth
  • working with local governments to remove the uncertainty and complexity associated with timber plantation planning processes
  • promoting Queensland´s competitive advantages and opportunities for new plantation investment through web-based and other information products and events
  • assisting industry develop and implementing a code of practice for plantation industry operations and a good neighbour charter
  • improving community understanding of the forest and wood plantations sector through education activities
  • encouraging industry to adopt credible third-party forest certification and chain-of-custody schemes
  • working with industry organisations and networks to help build their capability to support industry growth
  • identifying and clarifying new market opportunities for forest and wood plantations.
