Graduate program
If you are looking for a supportive environment in which to kick-start your career, then Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries (QPIF) is for you!
Part of the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation and with around 3000 people working at over 150 locations across the state, career opportunities in primary industries are as vast as Queensland's forests and waters - and the good news is we're looking for the right people to help us build a profitable and sustainable future for the state's $11 billion primary industries sector.
As an economic development agency, we provide a progressive workplace with a commitment to strengthening the market-led development and export culture for Queensland's primary industries.
Each year, around March and October, the Graduate Recruitment Program offers a number of placements across a range of disciplines including:
- science
- environmental science
- agriculture/horticulture
- business
- commerce
- public policy and government.
We offer graduates a dynamic, fast-paced work environment where you can learn new skills, participate in an exciting range of projects and work in unique locations throughout Queensland.
As a graduate officer, you will have a chance to make important contributions to Queensland's primary industries and regional Queensland. At the same time, you will develop job skills and build knowledge and experience through an intensive 12-month professional development program.
The program is focused on providing you with skills and experience to support your career goals. It includes:
- induction
- a policy development program
- introduction to machinery of government
- public sector writing skills
- introduction to project management
- mentoring by a senior employee
- personal development
- presentation skills
- career management
- cross-cultural awareness
- participation in a learning group which includes a joint project
- a range of online training courses
- the option for short-term work rotations in a variety of workplaces.
Progression opportunities
The Professional Progression Scheme is a process of internal promotion that recognises and rewards outstanding achievement and performance of eligible professional staff within QPIF. In this scheme, a panel review is used to assess achievement and performance for officers who wish to be considered for progression.

As part of the program, graduates may:
- be offered a permanent position within QPIF
- participate in a 12-month development program introducing you to project management, public administration, career management, machinery-of-government and a formal leadership program
- take part in one or two rotations (optional) throughout QPIF in the first year
- participate in short-term regional or metropolitan placement in at least one location other than your regular workplace (optional) - offering insight and experience across QPIF
- be offered an attractive remuneration package ($46,120.64 - $58,967.40).
To be eligible you must:
- be close to completing or have completed a bachelor or post-graduate degree within the last two years
- be a permanent resident of Australia or an Australian citizen.
