National Livestock Identification System
The National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) is the identification and traceability system for livestock. NLIS allows individual animals to be identified and tracked from their property of birth through to slaughter or the reverse from slaughter back to place of birth.
Lifetime traceability improves product integrity and market access (particularly for export markets), and assists with the management of disease and chemical residue issues.
The NLIS is based on the property registration system. Your place (property) must be registered with Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation if you keep one or more head of horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, buffalo, deer, camelids (camels, llama, alpaca), or 100 or more poultry including caged birds. Registration provides places with a property identification code, which is the key to tracking movements between places.
NLIS legal requirements for identification and tracking apply to persons in charge or dealing with cattle, sheep, pigs and goats.
