Codes of practice for the welfare of animals
Animal welfare codes of practice provide standards, guidelines and information aimed at providing acceptable animal welfare. The standards in the codes are the minimum acceptable.
The codes are generally about keeping a particular type of animal (such as cattle, pigs or poultry) or about particular situations involving animals (such as circuses or in science, at saleyards or abattoirs, or when being transported).
Animal welfare codes generally state that certain things 'should' be done and certain other things 'must' be done.
There are four types of animal welfare codes of practice under the Queensland Animal Care and Protection Act 2001.
