Veterinary and chemical residue laboratories

Samples can be submitted by private or industry veterinarians, Biosecurity Queensland staff (veterinarians, biosecurity inspectors, researchers) and some farmer groups (such as aquaculture/fish/prawn farmers).

Laboratories

  • Chemical Residue Laboratory
The laboratory works on monitoring chemical residues in food which has important implications to both domestic consumers and in protecting export market access for Queensland primary producers.

  • Tropical and aquatic animal health laboratory
The work carried out by the laboratory is focused on the animal health problems likely to be encountered in tropical environments.

  • Biosecurity Sciences Laboratory
The work carried out by the laboratory is focused on animal health problems likely to be encountered in south-eastern Queensland, especially in the poultry and aquaculture industries.

  • Natural Toxins Laboratory
The laboratory supports a range of industry-funded research projects in a wide range of areas, from poisonous plant toxins to fungal toxins in food crops.

  • Animal Disease Surveillance Laboratory
ADSL is the lead surveillance laboratory for the state, providing a diagnostic service to both intensive and extensive livestock industries, as well as emerging industries and peri-urban livestock farming.

Sample submission

  • Sample submission guidelines
Diagnoses and laboratory results are only as good as the samples submitted. Maintaining sample integrity is vital in order for accurate diagnosis.

  • Acceptance of specimens
Please note that samples from any animal will be accepted, regardless of background, if a disease incident is deemed to present an unacceptable risk to the health of either the community or commercial livestock.
