Forest plantation industry development project

Key projects are growing our private plantation sector

The Queensland Government is working with the Queensland forest industry to deliver more targeted industry development for the private plantation sector.

Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries (QPIF) recently launched a new statewide project with Timber Queensland to support this focus through improved services and enhanced capacity. Two new industry development officers have been appointed as part of the project.

New appointments to support growth

The new officers will work closely with plantation companies, timber processors, industry and research organisations, and government agencies to facilitate growth opportunities and address industry challenges.

One officer will be placed with Timber Queensland and the other within QPIF.

The officers will focus on:

  • addressing impediments to growth, and coordinating policy development
  • establishing collaborative industry relationships to provide a technical knowledge base
  • improving community understanding of the sector through education events
  • leading industry development projects, including funding proposals.

Other key QPIF projects

  • $44.6 million commitment with Forestry Plantations Queensland to deliver an additional 8200 ha of native sawlog plantations in South East Queensland
  • Review of the Queensland Tree Tenure System legislation (contained in the Forestry Act 1959, Land Title Act 1994 and Land Act 1994).
  • Review of the Timber Utilisation and Marketing Act 1987
  • Policy development through Council of Australian Governments (COAG) forums e.g. Forestry and Forest Products Committee

As part of the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation, QPIF also administers some forestry legislation such as the Timber Utilisation and Marketing Act 1987 and the Diseases in Timber Act 1975.

Horticulture and Forestry Science services

QPIF invests in a range of research and development projects, including the development of:

  • elite hardwood clonal seedling material
  • plantation management strategies
  • control strategies for endemic pests and diseases
  • profitable and sustainable early return wood products and production processes.
