Eradication strategy

Equine influenza (EI) is a highly contagious viral disease of all horse species. It has been present in Queensland since 25 August 2007.

There is a strong commitment in Queensland to eradicating the virus. This aim is achievable if everyone plays their part.

The EI containment and eradication strategy continues to be based on:

  • movement controls and biosecurity
  • vaccination buffer zones
  • strategic vaccination (infection suppression)
  • surveillance
  • infected premises control
  • information and education.
