Department history

The Department's functional origins go back to 1855, four years before the creation of Queensland as a separate colony, when a sheep scab inspector was appointed to the Moreton Bay District of New South Wales.

After Separation, the Queensland Government continued to address the problem of livestock diseases by passing regulations that were administered by the Stock Branch in the Colonial Secretary's Office.
