Property (place) registration

On this page:

Registration requirements

Your place (property) must be registered with DPI&F if you keep one or more head of horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, buffalo, deer, camelids (camels, llama, alpaca), or 100 or more poultry including caged birds. Places that must be registered include:

  • farms and holdings
  • saleyards
  • cattle tick and transit centres
  • agricultural show and sporting event grounds
  • feedlots
  • town and local government common areas
  • stock routes
  • pounds
  • animal parks
  • theme parks and zoos
  • live exporters
  • abattoirs and slaughterhouses.

Once registered, the place will be issued with a property identification code (PIC). A PIC must be allocated before National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) devices can be ordered.

In some instances when applying for registration, you may need to supply evidence of ownership of the place. DPI&F will contact you if this is required. Evidence of ownership may consist of:

  • a copy of a contract of sale
  • a copy of a rates notice
  • a copy of a lease agreement.

As a PIC owner you are required to:

  • notify the DPI&F of changes to your property details or contact information
  • notify the DPI&F within 14 days of the purchase or acquisition of a place on which the above livestock will be kept.

You can carry out registrations and changes either online or at a DPI&F office. If you are lodging an online application where a PIC has never been allocated, you will receive notification of your PIC by email or mail within approximately five working days.

If you are lodging an online application for a place that already has a PIC allocated, or if you are updating PIC details online, the application will be forwarded to your local DPI&F for processing.

DPI&F processing times will vary and you should contact your local DPI&F office for further information. Your local DPI&F office will contact you should any clarification be required. DPI&F will send you written confirmation about your registration.

If applying for registration of your place at your local DPI&F office, please enquire about processing times at time of application.
