General information

A native of South America, stinking passion flower (Passiflora foetida) is an invasive environmental weed.

Stinking passion flower is not a declared plant under Queensland legislation, however its control is recommended.


Scientific name Passiflora foetida
Impacts
  • invades forest edges, coastal vegetation, roadsides and disturbed areas
  • has the ability to increase its current distribution, spreading into other natural areas and becoming more invasive
  • poisonous to people and livestock
Description
  • a climbing vine, densely covered in soft, sometimes sticky hairs
  • leaves have 3#5 pointed lobes, 3#10 cm long
  • passionfruit-like flowers are 3#5 cm wide with cream petals and white, pink or purple centres
  • fruits are dry orange berries, 1#3 cm wide, enclosed in prickly outer leaves
  • has an unpleasant odour
Habitat and distribution
  • found along river and creek banks, crops and pastures
  • widespread in northern Queensland, less common in South East Queensland
Control
  • hand pulling vines most effective
