White passion flower



General information

White passion flower (Passiflora subpeltata) is a native of Brazil and one of three South American passion fruit vines that are a pest in Queensland. It is a thin-stemmed, climbing vine with broad, pale-green, three-lobed leaves.

White passion flower is not a declared plant under Queensland legislation, however its control is recommended.

Impacts
  • smothers native shrubs and trees
  • can be toxic to humans and livestock if eaten in sufficient quantities
Description
  • leaves are hairless
  • tendrils grow from the vine beneath each leaf
  • vine bears large white flowers
  • fruits are smooth, oval-shaped that remain a blue-green
Habitat and distribution
  • found in coastal Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria
  • invades forest edges, roadside vegetation and disturbed areas
Control
  • isolated vines can be hand pulled or grubbed out when soil is moist
  • herbicides effective
