Description
  • deep-bodied fish
  • varies from bright red to pale brown
  • red to red-brown spots more distinct over face, head and upper front body
  • large darker spot may be present on upper gill cover
Family name

Serranidae (cods and gropers)

Family description
  • bottom-dwelling (demersal) predators
  • highly regarded food fish
  • most have small scales
  • hard to see lateral lines and usually rounded to emarginate tail fins
