Asian mussel quarantine area lifted in Trinity Inlet
The Asian mussel quarantine for Trinity Inlet was lifted by the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F) on 30 May 2008. Vessel movements are no longer restricted and movement permits are not required.
Since mid-January 2008 and following extensive surveys, no additional Asian green or Asian bag mussels have been found on vessels, on other marine infrastructure, or in samples of sediment and plankton within the quarantine area.
Ongoing monitoring
Monitoring in Trinity Inlet for these pest mussels will continue in order to demonstrate proof-of-freedom.
What should I do?
- Owners of slipways and boats can help with monitoring by thoroughly inspecting vessels and reporting suspect sightings. Inspections should include internal seawater systems.
- If you think you have either species of Asian mussels on your vessel, contact the DPI&F hotline on 13 25 23.
Both Asian mussel species have potentially economic, ecological and social impacts. These include reduced productivity of commercial and recreational fisheries, and nuisance fouling of vessels and other marine equipment.
