The Hon Tim Mulherin

Queensland Minister for Primary Industries, Fisheries and Rural and Regional Queensland
Member for Mackay

Mr Mulherin has been the Member for Mackay since 1995.

He was born in Mackay and has lived there most of his life.

Prior to entering Parliament, he was a state organiser for the Australian Labor Party and an administrative officer in the electricity industry.

He also has served as a branch councillor for the Australian Services Union.

Mr Mulherin has been a member of the Public Accounts Committee and a member of several Ministerial Legislation Committees: Mines, Energy and Regional Development; Primary Industries; Natural Resources and Rural Communities.

He is a patron of many local sporting and community organisations.

He was appointed Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries on December 12, 2005.

Mr Mulherin was re-appointed as Primary Industries and Fisheries Minister following the 2006 election and re-appointed as Primary Industries, Fisheries and Rural and Regional Queensland Minister following the 2009 election.

Mr Mulherin has long had an interest in primary industries.

As the Member for Mackay, he represents one of Australia's largest sugar-producing regions. The area makes a significant economic contribution to Queensland with processing plants including sugar mills, a sugar refinery, and an abattoir; beef, dairy, and horticulture industries; engineering services to support the coal industry; and tourism.

Mr Mulherin’s family also has a history of involvement in the sugar cane and dairy industries.

In just over three years in the portfolio Mr Mulherin has demonstrated a 'hands-on' approach that has been appreciated by the many stakeholders contributing to primary industries and fisheries worth some $11 billion per year to Queensland.

He is the key player in driving the credentials of Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries as a key economic development agency for the Queensland Government.

Outside of his parliamentary and ministerial duties, Mr Mulherin is a devoted family man to wife Erin and their three young sons Rory, Declan and Liam.
