The Hon Peter Lawlor
Minister for Tourism and Fair Trading
Member for Southport
Peter Lawlor was elected to the Queensland Parliament in 2001 as the first Labor member for Southport. He was sworn in as Minister for Tourism and Fair Trading on 30 March 2009.
Background:
Born in Ayr as the eldest of five boys, Mr Lawlor grew up on the Gold Coast and completed high school at Marist Brothers in Ashgrove. He worked and travelled extensively for the next 10 years residing in places including Port Moresby and South Africa, working as an accountant before returning to the Gold Coast. In 1981 he was admitted as a solicitor and commenced practice as a sole practitioner on the Gold Coast for the next 20 years.
Mr Lawlor went on to become a Gold Coast City Councillor campaigning to preserve the Broadwater and protect the local environment for future generations. He continues to do so as the Member for Southport.
New Role:
Having lived on the Gold Coast for most of his life, Mr Lawlor is well aware of the importance tourism is to the region and to Queensland. Queensland’s tourism industry is facing very challenging times and as Minister for Tourism he is committed to representing the entire state, from Coolangatta to the Cape.
He also has a strong interest in fair trading issues and will continue working to increase consumer confidence and business integrity and will work to develop the liquor, gaming and racing industries in a socially responsible way.

Mr Lawlor has three children - Ali, Jane and Phil - and two grandchildren.
