Ms Jan Jarratt

Parliamentary Secretary for Employment and Economic Development
Member for Whitsunday

Born at Miles on October 22, 1958, Ms Jarratt was raised on a wheat and cattle property at North Dulacca. She has two sisters and a brother with whom she attended a one-teacher primary school called Glenaubyn.

Ms Jarratt received her secondary education at a boarding school in Warwick where she was school captain in Year 12.

Ms Jarratt has two sons, Ben and Jeremy who are now young adults. While the boys were young, Ms Jarratt studied to become a primary school teacher and her first posting was to Koumala State School. Later she moved to Mackay and taught at Mackay West State School before taking up a position as learning support teacher based at Walkerston State School.

Her interests include travel, reading for pleasure, diving, meeting new people and learning to sail.

In 2007 Ms Jarratt married Hilar (Ziggy) Ziegler and they now reside in Cannonvale.

Ms Jarratt entered politics in 1999 when she was pre-selected as the Labor candidate for Whitsunday.

She was elected as Member for Whitsunday on 17 February 2001, and has been successfully re-elected three times since.

In the historic 2009 election win where Premier Anna Bligh became the first female to be elected as Premier, Ms Jarratt retained her seat with a 3% swing.
