Queensland sheep and goat producers have less than a month to claim a rebate on electronic identification (eID) equipment ahead of mandatory sheep and goat eID requirements coming into effect next year.

From 1 January 2027, sheep and goats in Queensland must be fitted with an NLIS-accredited eID device (tag), when they move from their property.

As part of Queensland Government funding to support the sheep and goat industry prepare for eID implementation, producers can access a 75 cent point-of-sale discount on eligible NLIS-accredited sheep and goat eID tags and a rebate on eID equipment.

The equipment rebate closes on 30 September 2026, however the 75 cent point-of-sale discount on eligible NLIS-accredited sheep and goat eID tags will continue until 30 June 2027.

The equipment rebate provides eligible producers, saleyards, processors, livestock agents and agricultural shows with a 50 per cent reimbursement on National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) readers and related equipment needed to scan and manage electronically tagged livestock.

Department of Primary Industries Deputy Director-General Biosecurity Rachel Chay said now was the time for producers and businesses to ensure they had the equipment needed to meet the new requirements.

"The rebate helps reduce the upfront cost of purchasing readers and related equipment, making it easier for businesses to prepare for the transition to eID,” Dr Chay said.

"With applications closing on 30 September 2026, I encourage producers and industry participants who have not yet applied to take advantage of the funding while it remains available."

"Queensland's livestock traceability system plays a critical role in protecting our industry from biosecurity threats and the new system will strengthen our state's ability to trace sheep and goats quickly and accurately during emergency disease outbreaks."

Under the Queensland Government’s rebate scheme, eligible applicants can receive:

  • 50 per cent rebate up to $1,600 per Property Identification Code (PIC) for Queensland sheep and goat producers
  • 50 per cent rebate up to $2,500 for small saleyards or $65,000 for large saleyards
  • 50 per cent rebate up to $2,500 for small processors, $10,000 for medium processors or $85,000 for large processors
  • 50 per cent rebate up to $1,600 for livestock agents and agricultural show sub-chambers.
