From 1 July 2026, all SMS communications from the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) will have registered sender IDs.

To combat SMS scams and protect consumers, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has introduced a mandatory SMS Sender ID Register. This initiative aims to reduce the risk of scammers impersonating trusted brands via text messages.

Key changes from 1 July 2026

Businesses and organisations that use branded sender IDs for SMS communications must register these names with the ACMA. Unverified messages may not be from the organisation they claim to represent.

Department of Primary Industries sender IDs

We have the following sender IDs that we use for SMS communication.

DPI Alert Important time-sensitive communications e.g. industry alerts or disaster messaging
DPI QG News Generic messaging
DPI NEAEP Relating to Electric Ants response
DPI QGOV Relating to DPI Fisheries
DPIgrains Relating to grain cropping in Central Queensland
DPI-LSheep
DPI LSheep
Relating to Leading Sheep
FIREANTS Relating to Fire Ant self- treatment and alerts by the Fire Ant Suppression Taskforce (FAST)

Messages which require 2-way communication and direct contact from departmental officers from personal devices will continue to appear as from a phone number.

What to do if you receive an unverified message

Messages sent from unregistered sender IDs may be blocked or labelled as Unverified. This will help you identify legitimate communications more easily.

If you receive a message claiming to be from the Department of Primary Industries or the Queensland Government but it appears as Unverified:

  • treat it with caution
  • avoid clicking on links or sharing personal information until you confirm its legitimacy.
