Access information held by the department

You can request access to government-held information under the Right to Information Act 2009.

What you can access

Right to information is the Queensland Government's approach to giving the community greater access to information.

We are committed to providing access to information held by the government unless on balance releasing it is contrary to the public interest.

Amendments introduced by the Information Privacy and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2023 mean that, from 1 July 2025, all requests to access information held by the Queensland Government are managed under the Right to Information Act 2009. This includes requests for access solely to your own personal information.

Some department information is available without lodging an application.

Request information through administrative access

Some department information may be available without lodging a right-to-information application.

You may access information administratively if it includes:

  • certain types of non-personal information without sensitivity or confidentiality
  • your own personal information (not another person's, unless you have written consent).

If a document contains the personal or commercial information of multiple people, administrative access is only available when all parties provide prior written consent.

Read the Administrative Release Policy and Procedure (PDF, 282KB) for more details.

Make a right-to-information application

If the information is not available online, you can apply to access documents held in the department.

Your application must:

  • be accompanied by the application fee if you are seeking information that doesn’t solely contain your personal information
  • give enough information about the document for the responsible officer of the department or the Minister to identify the document
  • state an address to which notices may be sent.

You can either:

  • apply online
    or
  • email or post your application and evidence of identity to the department.
