This project supports graziers in adopting sustainable grazing practices to improve beef production and environmental health around the Great Barrier Reef.

What we do

The project addresses land management and water-quality issues in a whole-of-beef business context. Through extension processes that enable change, we support graziers to adapt and grow their beef businesses with Grazing Best Management Practices (BMP).

BMP increases productivity and profitability while achieving the Queensland Government's Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Plan targets.  An innovative grazier-centred extension model of practice underpins the service and activities provided.

Our extension officers work to:

  • get to know a grazier’s operation and understand their current expertise and strengths to better support them in implementing new or different practices that improve business and environmental sustainability
  • provide a regionally-based, independent and confidential extension service that provides practical management options relevant to an individual beef business
  • provide follow-up assistance to implement a new practice and links to other service providers offering technical and financial assistance
  • provide information on research and development to assist graziers in identifying and evaluating strategies relevant to their operation.

Our services

The project offers graziers locally relevant information and support regarding:

  • business – ensuring a future for beef businesses
  • land and pasture management – the driving force of beef production potential and reducing sediment loss
  • livestock – turning pasture into beef as efficiently as possible.

We support graziers by offering extension activities, including:

One-on-one assistance (on and off property) dominates our activities and is essential to support the adoption of new practices. Workshops and field days increase stakeholder engagement and awareness of BMP.

The project also provides:

Benefits of the project

Improving land conditions through whole-of-business management will contribute to:

  • 25% reduction in fine sediment by 2025
  • 90% of grazing lands having greater than 70% ground cover late in the dry season.
