Without strong intervention, hundreds of potentially invasive plant and animal species could become major pests in Queensland in the future. We have an opportunity to prevent the establishment of these invasive species and avoid multi-million dollar impacts.

Preventative initiatives include:

  • legislation to prohibit owning or selling high-risk pests
  • surveillance systems to detect new populations as early as possible, while statewide eradication is still feasible
  • eradication of high-risk invasive species wherever feasible.

Biosecurity Queensland has created invasive species risk assessments to increase understanding of key invasive plants and animals and provide a foundation for evidence-based policy development.
