Follow these tips to stay safe.
Safe fishing
- Avoid fishing or cleaning fish in areas where people swim.
- Keep fish scraps, frames and bait out of the water near swimming areas.
- Dispose of scraps responsibly by using bins if provided or taking them with you.
- Don’t throw your scraps, fish frames or leftover bait in the water unless you’re far away from where people get into the water.
Many species of sharks will happily take an easy meal if it is offered by a person fishing or a boat.
What to do with fish frames
- Dispose responsibly—use the bins if they are provided or freeze and place in your garbage bin on rubbish day.
- Repurpose—use as crab pot bait or fertiliser, or make fish stock for recipes.
- Donate—contribute to the Keen Angler Program, which collects fish frames to help monitor Queensland's key fish stocks.
