This project enhances grain farming in Great Barrier Reef catchments, focusing on sustainable practices to improve crop yields and environmental health.

What we do

This project demonstrates how improved farming practices can:

  • contribute to the health of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR)
  • increase productivity and contribute to the growth of the agricultural sector.

This initiative is one of 10 projects led by the department to support the Queensland Government's Reef Water Quality Program, which aims to improve water quality in the GBR region.

Through on-farm demonstration sites, field days and workshops, we introduce growers to the potential of improved practices and provide them with the skills and knowledge to incorporate these new practices on their farms.

On-farm demonstration sites

Our on-farm demonstration sites serve as living laboratories where growers can see the potential impacts of improved technologies and farming methods.

The sites:

  • give growers insight into the potential benefits of implementing these improvements on their farms
  • provide valuable training opportunities for growers
  • showcase new techniques, equipment, and practices that improve agricultural and environmental outcomes.

Field days and workshops

These practical and informative sessions equip growers with the knowledge and skills they need to implement the demonstrated technologies and methods on their farms.

Hands-on learning

Practical exercises give participants firsthand experience of using new technologies and methods and enable better understanding to improve the chance of successful implementation.

Tailored guidance

The workshops are customised to:

  • address specific needs and challenges growers face on their farms
  • offer personalised guidance and recommendations to ensure growers can adopt the technologies effectively.

Networking opportunities

The sessions provide an opportunity for growers to connect with industry experts, fellow growers, and agricultural professionals.

This networking environment fosters knowledge sharing, collaboration, and the exchange of best practices.

Benefits of the project

The technologies and methods demonstrated in this project deliver many benefits for growers:

Increased productivity

By adopting best practices growers can maximise their profits through:

  • higher crop yields
  • improved crop quality
  • improved overall productivity.

More efficient use of resources

Improved technologies often improve efficiency and make better use of resources such as water, fertilisers, and pesticides.

By adopting these practices, growers can:

  • minimise their environmental footprint
  • reduce costs.

Improved sustainability

Sustainable agricultural practices are essential for long-term business success.

By adopting best practices, growers can:

  • conserve natural resources
  • protect soil health
  • support biodiversity.
