Catch. Check. Complete.

Create a trip, add your catch and submit

You don’t need extra gear or extra paperwork. The Qld Fishing 2.0 app makes recording simple and fast, whether you fish every week or a few times a year.

If you can scroll, tap and take a photo, you can record a trip.

[Narrator]: In this video, we’re looking at how to record details about your fishing trip.

To kick things off, you first select where you fished from. The three options are private boat (which includes vessels such as jet skis and kayaks), charter boat if you’ve been out on a charter fishing trip, or shore if you were fishing from the land.

For this example, we are going to run through a private boat trip, so we will tap on the ‘Private boat’ option.

Next, you will be asked how many fishers were on the boat. You can tap in the box and add the number, and then press done.

Next, you will be asked if you were the skipper of the boat. Simply tap your selection of Y for yes or N for no.

You will then be asked to select if you want to record for the whole boat or if you want to record just your individual catch.

Recording for the whole boat is the preferred option, as this is most useful to better understand and assess the health of our fish stocks.

If you choose to record on behalf of the whole boat, there is also an option later in your fishing trip history section to split out your own catch as well.

Tap on the box for your selection.

Record a trip in minutes

A typical trip record looks like this:

  1. Start a new trip.
  2. Add the basics about your day on the water.
  3. Record your catch (what you kept and released).
  4. Note depredation if it happened (for example, fish taken by sharks).
  5. Add optional details (a trip name, comments and photos, if you want).
  6. Submit your trip.

What to record and what’s optional

You can keep it simple or add as much detail as you want; it's up to you.

If you didn’t catch anything

Record the trip anyway. “Zero catch” trips still matter because they help show fishing activity for all kinds of days and conditions. It helps scientists and managers make decisions based on real patterns. You can also see what the conditions were like on your zero-catch days in your trip history.

Your location

Recording your fishing location is optional. If you choose to record it, the app captures it at a broad level only (not pinpointed to specific reefs or spots). This supports useful analysis while helping protect your privacy.

Depredation

If sharks or other predators took fish during your trip, record the number you think were wholly or partially taken. This helps scientists understand how often depredation happens and how it affects fishing.

Limited reception

You can enter trip details in remote locations or areas with limited reception, then submit when you’re back online.

How we use and protect your data

Scientists use the information you submit through the app, alongside other recreational, commercial, charter, and biological data, to create stock assessments. These assessments feed into harvest strategies that guide how our fisheries are managed using tools such as possession limits, size limits and seasonal closures.

Fisheries Queensland stores your data securely in its database and does not use it for enforcement. See the disclaimer and privacy statement for full details.
