The Primary Connections team supports farmers, farmer groups and extension providers.

The Primary Connections team supports farmers, farmer groups and extension providers to strengthen local learning networks and improve farm sustainability across Great Barrier Reef catchments.

The project builds on the previous work of the Integrated Engagement and Capacity Building project.

This project aims to:

  • build capability, confidence, leadership and collaboration within farming communities
  • support trusted farmer-led peer-to-peer learning networks across Great Barrier Reef catchments
  • strengthen knowledge sharing between farmers, farmer groups and extension providers
  • encourage adoption of sustainable farming practices that improve productivity, resilience and environmental outcomes
  • improve water quality outcomes and support the long-term health of the Great Barrier Reef.

To reach these goals, we:

  • support farmer groups to deliver local learning activities such as field demonstrations, workshops, field days, on-farm trials and study tours through small-group funding
  • bring farmer groups together to share ideas and learnings to support peer-to-peer learning through trusted local farmer networks
  • assist farmer groups to identify priorities and connect with relevant programs, experts and funding opportunities
  • strengthen existing farmer networks to increase the reach and effectiveness of extension services
  • provide a free online learning platform with training resources, practical tools, technical information and professional development opportunities for farmers and extension staff.

Benefits of the project

Primary Connections recognises that farmer groups are trusted local networks that can engage producers who may not participate in traditional extension or training programs.

The project helps farmers to:

  • learn from other farmers through practical, locally relevant activities
  • test, adapt and validate new ideas and farming practices to local conditions
  • build confidence and leadership within farming communities
  • improve productivity, sustainability and farm resilience
  • access flexible online learning resources and community development opportunities
  • contribute to improved environmental outcomes and water quality for the Reef.

What’s next

The project will:

  • provide funding opportunities for eligible farmer group projects to support farmer-led demonstrations, workshops, field days, study tours and on-farm trials across Reef catchments
  • provide a planning toolkit to support the planning of farmer group activities
  • expand access to training resources through an online learning platform for farmers and extension providers
  • bring groups together to share information and strengthen connections between farmer groups, industry experts, extension services and funding opportunities
  • continue building a connected learning system that supports innovation, knowledge sharing and continuous improvement across the agricultural industry.
